BD is passionate about advancing the world of health™. Our passion drives a strong commitment to promoting human health, improving the communities we serve, and funding educational and research initiatives. On an annual basis, BD receives hundreds of requests from external requestors. Due to finite resources, not every qualified request will receive support.
BD never provides funding to influence the purchase, lease, recommendation, or prescription of BD products or solutions.
This material is to be used as guidance only and is not all-inclusive. BD policies and guidelines are subject to change without notice.

BD strategically partners with leading nonprofit organizations and foundations to invest in programs and initiatives that address unmet healthcare needs, improve healthcare access, and strengthen the capacity of health systems to care for all patients, especially the most vulnerable. The majority of BD’s philanthropic funds are allocated as part of an annual budgeting process and are focused primarily on existing programs that are led by our current non-profit partners.
Charitable contributions funding is available only to non-profit organizations (or local jurisdiction’s equivalent) recognized as charitable organizations.
Educational grants are considered for training institutions or conference sponsors to support bona fide education programs dedicated to promoting objective scientific and educational activities and discourse. These programs must be for the benefit of any potentially interested clinicians in the community, and not just those on staff at the institution
- Fellowship Programs: post-professional, funded and planned learning experiences in a focused sub-specialty area of clinical practice, education or research. Fellowships are intended for post-doctoral, post-residency prepared or board-certified health professionals
- Patient Education Programs: patient health or disease education, and public health and disease awareness campaigns
Funding must be used for the following permitted purposes:
- To reduce overall conference costs for all attendees
- To cover reasonable honoraria, travel, lodging, and modest meals for HCPs who are bona fide conference or meeting faculty members
- Except for HCPs in training located in Massachusetts and Vermont, to provide financial assistance for scholarships or other educational funds to permit medical students, residents, fellows, and other HCPs in training to attend carefully selected educational conferences or meetings; and the selection of attending individuals is made by the conference sponsor or training institution
BD will NOT support the following:
- Funding to build or support the building of labs, offices, or research centers
- Sponsoring a fellow for a private practice
- Paying an honorarium to attend any third-party educational conference
- Programs located at venues not conducive to the underlying educational purpose of the event
- Programs with agendas that are not primarily focused on the underlying educational purpose of the event
Apply for fellowship, patient education, third party conferences, and training institution programs.
BD supports independent research to advance scientific and clinical knowledge related to our products, technologies, and therapies. Decisions to support ISS requests never take in to account the volume, nor value of actual or potential business generated by the requestor.
ISS are studies developed and sponsored by an independent investigator (also referred to as a Sponsor-Investigator); and are designed to address meaningful scientific and/or clinical objectives. The independent investigator maintains all regulatory, ethical, and applicable legal responsibility for the studies or projects; and solely controls patient safety, protocol content, and data collection, analysis, and reporting
Investigator sponsored studies:
- May be either a clinical or non-clinical study for which BD may provide monetary support, product, equipment, or in-kind service
- Support must only be provided legitimate research activities
- Any monetary support must represent fair market value for the research work to be performed and should be provided pursuant to a milestone payment schedule
- Requestors must be an organization or institution
- The Sponsor-Investigator must have the necessary qualifications and resources to conduct the research and must be selected on the basis of such qualifications and resources, not for improper purposes
- BD strives to decide on each application within 90 days. However, if the application is missing information, this process may take longer.
Payments to individual HCPs are not permitted.
Proposals are evaluated according to their scientific merit, alignment with our areas of research interest, and available funding. Grant provision is contingent upon full execution of the research agreement by both parties
Areas of interest - Investigator sponsored studies (ISS)
BD strategically focuses the majority of its investigator sponsored study investments on topics that have been prioritized by BD businesses as key areas of interest. What follows are the current areas of interest for each BD business. Investigator sponsored studies that relate to the following topical areas will be provided first consideration for funding.
Definition of Application Types
BD allows for applicants to submit either a concept or full proposal. A concept proposal is an abbreviated version of a full ISS proposal. This allows the investigator to ascertain if BD has an interest in learning more information. Although a full protocol is not required for initial assessment, a full protocol submission is required before the full proposal application can be reviewed by the BU Compliance Committee.
