Haemostats

BD haemostats come in various forms that all help accelerate natural clot formation in many surgical applications. They facilitate use with features such as preloaded applicators and ready-to-use designs.

Overview

BD offers a comprehensive range of haemostat products in a variety of formats to help surgeons address different types of bleeding that occur in a wide range of surgical procedures.

Haemostat Basics

Haemostats can enhance clot formation and help to achieve haemostasis by controlling or preventing troublesome bleeding during surgical interventions where conventional methods of hemostasis are ineffective.

Avitene™ MCH: Avitene™ is an absorbable topical haemostatic agent prepared as a dry, sterile, fibrous, water insoluble partial hydrochloric acid salt of purified bovine corium collagen. It is prepared in multiple forms including a loose fibrous flour, a compacted “non-woven” web form, and a collagen sponge.

Arista ™ AH: This technology incorporates hydrophilic, flowable, microporous particles synthesized by cross-linking purified plant starch through a proprietary process; Arista™ AH is a 100% plant-based polysaccharide. Arista™ AH contains no animal or human components. Arista™ AH is a fine, dry, sterilized white powder that is biocompatible, non-pyrogenic, and is typically absorbed within 24 to 48 hours.

How Haemostats Work

Different types of haemostats control bleeding in various ways.

● Arista™ AH: The power of Arista™ AH lies in its proprietary MPH™ (microporous polysaccharide hemospheres) technology. Consisting of microporous particles with a controlled pore size, the spheres are designed to act as a molecular sieve. The powerful osmotic action dehydrates and forms a gelled matrix to enhance the natural clotting process.

Avitene™ MCH: Avitene™ effectively enhances platelet aggregation and the release of proteins to form fibrin, resulting in haemostasis.

Haemostats are often used in surgery to achieve haemostasis. For Arista™ AH, this can include:

● Cardiothoracic

● Cardiovascular

● Vascular

● Gynecological

● Urology

● Orthopedic surgery

● General surgery

● Plastic surgery

● Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery

Use of Arista™ AH in neurological or ophthalmic surgical procedures is excluded from its approved indication.

Avitene™ can be used in any surgical procedure where a topical haemostat can be used.

Please note: Avitene™ Ultrafoam and MCH can be used in any surgical specialty other than ocular.

Haemostasis is important for surgeons, when trying to control bleeding during surgery. Surgeons should consider the wound and the type of surgery when selecting a haemostat. Understanding each kind of hemostat can help surgeons achieve the best outcome.
